“Alternative duo Retrofile first burst onto the alternative music scene with the release of their debut single “Two Words” in 2017. The single amassed hundreds of thousands of streams within months of its release and kick started their career. With a wave of high energy live shows under their belts and an enthusiastic fan base backing them, Retrofile went on to release their debut EP Heard It All Before in 2019, which saw the duo invigorate their sound and look with a blend of new wave and modern pop sensibilities. Although the pandemic affected the duo’s plans for touring, Retrofile took the following years to write and record new material for their debut album. They also accumulated over 750 thousand monthly listeners and over 22 million streams in 2022 on Spotify, and were selected to showcase at Canada Music Week 2023.”
Interview answers by Noah Martino
When did you know you wanted to be a musician?
When I was a kid! Luke and I started our first band when we were 10. I think that’s roughly around the time we started attempting to write original music. Attempting being the key word here.
Are you trained? How did you develop your skills?
I’m not classically trained in any particular instrument. Neither is Luke. With any instrument we’ve just taught ourselves by ear and interest. Obviously lots of time and practice as well. We both play a handful of instruments.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
At the moment I’d say Talking Heads, The Killers, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Bowie .. it’s difficult to choose just a few, we listen to loads of music!
How would you describe your sound?
I’d say its combination of arena pop/rock and disco/dancefloor grooves. We’re always trying to strike that balance in our music. I’d also describe it as fun! We want people to have a good time jamming out to our tunes.
What’s your favourite tune in your repertoire and why?
“Two Words” is special for us. It really did kick this whole ‘Retrofile’ thing off. I can’t say I really have a favourite though, honestly. Each track represents a different time in my life so they could all be my favourite on any given day depending on my mood.
What can audiences expect from one of your live shows?
Lots of groovy/vibey tunes and lots of energy from the two of us. Possibly a couple jokes. Gotta keep things light. We’ve actually been working on our live set list a fair bit lately!
Where can we find your music?
All the usual places! Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Deezer ETC.
