Birdman leads the Independent Spirit Award (ISA) Nominations with 6, Boyhood, Selma, and Nightcrawler follow closely with 5 nominations each.

For those keeping score, Foxcatcher was not eligible in any of these categories, while Imitation Game was, and was snubbed. Harvey Weinstein has bigger fish to fry, but ISA winners over the last few years have all been at least nominated for Oscars, many have won in the last few years, which is a change.

The ISA nominations typically have some independent minded nominations that will elude Oscars, this year those would be Love is Strange, and potentially Nightcrawler, but both deserve major attention. ISA frequently nominates female directors, well more frequently than the Academy, and I hope Ava DuVerney gets some serious traction from this.

In the end this is a solid group of nominees that match the independent spirit, let’s see if the winners rubber stamp Oscar contenders or they go their own way.
